Last month, Xiaomi unveiled MIUI 10 with improvements to speed, design, sounds, and AI. The latest version of Xiaomi’s skin comes with plenty of new features including a new design for many of the system apps to take advantage of the taller aspect ratio displays that its devices are now coming with.
While the stable build of MIUI 10 is still a few months away from release, Xiaomi has released a global beta of the ROM. This allows advanced users and developers to install the ROM on their device if they wish to experience MIUI 10 on their device right away.
Compatible Devices
For now, Xiaomi has released the MIUI 10 Global Beta for the following devices:
- Mi 6
- Mi 5
- Mi MIX 2/2S
- Redmi S2
- Redmi Note 5 Pro/Note 5
Already running MIUI 9 Global Beta?
If you are already running MIUI 9 Global Beta ROM on your phone, go to Updater app and check for updates. You should get an OTA to MIUI 10 Global beta.
Unlock Redmi Note 5 Pro, Mi Mix 2/2S, Mi 6 Bootloader
If you are new to this, you should know that MIUI Beta (any version) can only be installed on Mi devices with an unlocked bootloader. Xiaomi officially lets you unlock the device if you request them through this link.
- Download the Mi Unlock app on your PC.
- Next, sign in with your Mi Account or sign-in with FB account if it’s connected.
- Turn off your phone. Then press Volume down key and Power button, together.
- This will boot your phone into Fastboot mode.
- Next, connect the phone to PC using the USB cable.
- Once the software detects the phone, click “Unlock”.
Pre-requisites:
Before we go ahead, make sure to take backup of all the data on your phone. Even though the beta is stable, you never know if something goes wrong with your phone. All your data on the phone will be erased during the update. You will need a Windows PC or a Laptop, and make sure that your phone is 100% charged.
Note: The below-mentioned method works with Xiaomi phones running the stable build of MIUI 9.
How to Install MIUI 10 Beta using Fastboot on Redmi Note 5 Pro, Mi 6, Mi Mix 2/2S:
Step 1: Depending on your phone type, you need to download the respective ROM by following the link below
- Xiaomi Mi 6|Mi MIX | Mi MIX 2 | Mi MIX 2S
- Redmi S2|Redmi Note 5| Redmi Note 5 Pro
- Xiaomi Mi 5| Mi Note 2
Step 2: Once the download is complete, right-click on the file, and extract the content to anywhere on the PC. Remember the folder name. We will need the path of this folder later. Next, you will have to boot the phone into Fastboot. To do this, first power off your phone, and then reboot while holding the Volume key and the Power button at the same time. Then connect the device to the Windows PC/laptop via a micro USB cable
Step 3: Download the MIUI ROM Flashing Tool, and install it. Launch the tool, and if your phone’s bootloader is unlocked, you should see ☆ next to it. If you see this ★, then you will have to try and unlock the bootloader of your phone again.
Once the flashing tool recognizes your phone, click on the select button, and point it to the folder where you extracted the ROM.
Step 4: Next, click on the Flash button to initiate the process. The software displays the progress of the installation. So make sure to wait till the progress bar goes green, and you see a ‘Success’ status update. Post update, the device will reboot automatically.
While the software offers you to keep the user data, I would highly recommend you to clean install. This will ensure that there are no compatibility issues with any of your apps already installed and MIUI 10.
