HTC is going to hold an event in Taiwan on the 19th where they’ve confirmed they’ll be showing off the Butterfly S and the Desire 600. The latter has actually already been announced, it’s the former that’s a new device. According to an anonymous source who spoke to Focus Taiwan, the Butterfly S will have the exact same 5 inch 1080p display as the original Butterfly, a “faster processor”, it’ll have only one storage option (16 GB), though you can expand that via microSD, and it’s going to cost 20,000 Taiwanese dollars. That comes out to about $670.

Where does the Butterfly S sit in HTC’s portfolio? Assuming HTC puts a Snapdragon 600 in there, then it’s pretty much just a One, but with a larger screen, in a plastic body, and without BoomSound. There are rumors saying HTC will announce the 5.9 inch One Max later this year, so maybe this 5 inch model fits in the middle?

To tell you the truth, I don’t even understand why HTC invented the Butterfly series in the first place. The original Butterfly was the company’s flagship device for barely five months. It landed in America as the Droid DNA in late November 2012. The HTC One started then shipping in April 2013.

Will the same thing happen to the Butterfly S?
