Living on the edge won’t be cheap. Samsung’s funky new Galaxy Note Edge will hit AT&T stores soon and then branch to other carriers, with a price tag that matches the curved-screen ambitions.
The phone will cost $946 without a subsidy or $400 with one, prices that push it into iPhone 6 Plus territory. You can check it out at an AT&T store beginning Nov. 7.
Samsung says it’s bringing the phablet to Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular as well. You’ll also be able to check it out from the Samsung Experience section of Best Buy stores in the coming days.
Our hands-on of the Galaxy Note Edge found it rather uncomfortable to hold and of questionable utility. The right side of the device curves sharply, acting as an always-on ticker for other apps. Samsung says you can customize this portion of the screen with specific apps.
Why this matters: Samsung’s newest phone certainly has impressive screen engineering, but it’s difficult to imagine many will want to fork over close to $1,000 for one. It feels more like a concept than a polished consumer product for the masses. Given how many phones Samsung cranks out, it can probably afford a dud or two as it tries to maintain its dominant role in the Android ecosystem.
Curved screens for all
The phone’s launch on multiple carriers is a little surprising given Samsung’s previous indication of a very limited release. The company may still have tepid expectations for sales, hoping that just getting the phones in some consumers’ hands may garner some feedback or generate buzz.
It’s spec’d out pretty well, with a 5.6-inch screen, 2.7 GHz quad-core processor, 16 megapixel camera, and 32GB of storage (up to 128GB with a microSD card). It also comes with the S-Pen and Note-specific software. Like many other Samsung phones, Charcoal Black or Frost White are your color choices.
